For Fraunhofer, English allows international collaboration.

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research and development organization. Headquartered in Germany with a research center in Chile, the company communicates in English, as it is the dominant language of science. From international conferences to the leading industry journals, scientists communicate in English — making proficiency critical at Fraunhofer and at scientific organizations around the world.

Known for developing the MP3 technology, Fraunhofer strives to impact lives around the world by developing technological innovations and novel systems solutions. Fraunhofer’s Chile Research Foundation — funded by CORFO, the Chilean Economic Development Agency — was established to focus on systems biotechnology in order to sustain the natural resources that support Chile’s economy.

Fraunhofer Chile research projects are carried out in close collaboration with scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology, with extensive interactions and exchange visits between Chilean and German researchers. Fraunhofer faces the ongoing challenge of finding English-proficient researchers in a country where English skills are not widespread, which makes English skills important hiring criteria.
